I’ve been spending the last week or so wrapping my head around the energies of the New Moon partial solar eclipse on July 12, 2018, which occurs at 10:48 pm EDT at 20 degrees Cancer. With Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto all retrograde at that time, the energy of fresh starts we normally expect with a solar eclipse has the feeling of “everything old is new again.” And when you factor in that we’re dealing with the eclipse in Cancer, the sign of home, tradition, foundation, and wanting to feel emotionally secure, we may find that who or what gave us comfort in the past may come around for another go, although in another guise.
The full moon in Capricorn on June 28th, conjunct a retrograding Saturn (past karma), will shine a spotlight on our path up the mountain (whatever our heart’s desire is at the moment). Where have we been letting old patterns from the past hold us back on our journey toward fulfillment, to reaching a new summit? Where have we plateaued because we may not have the skill set yet to achieve what we want?
That full moon is conjunct the minor planet Orius, whose symbolism includes “…accurate assessment on internal attributes and tuned into creativity.” Capricorn is the master builder of empires. But in order to build our empire of the heart, we have to accept our destiny as builders of our own fate. How have we let negativity and low self-worth stifle our natural creativity? That full moon in Capricorn will let us know — and we may reach a decisive moment in which the simple choice finally becomes the most obvious.
Following two weeks later, the New Moon Solar Eclipse on July 12 is about initiating the movement to turn that simple choice into action.
You want love? Ask someone out. You want money? Start your new business. You want stronger friendships? Have more parties and coffee chats with phones tucked out of sight. You want more creativity? Sign up for that writing or art or music class.
Whatever “simple choice” you make at the new moon solar eclipse will have the energy signature of the past, but in a new form:
Mercury Retrograde – you will re-connect with a past person or situation (or connect with someone or something new that reminds you strongly of a past person / situation)
Mars Retrograde – so that you can re-direct your energies
Jupiter Retrograde – into a state of expansiveness you’ve felt in the past
Saturn Retrograde – (that may have felt destined)
Neptune Retrograde – or a dream long-forgotten, unattainable due to a lack of belief in yourself
Pluto Retrograde – that can now manifest in a transformed state
Depending on your individual chart, some eclipses are more dramatic than others.
Eclipses are cosmic “path-righters.” Sometimes our direction needs to be changed. Sometimes one door needs to be slammed shut with our finger catching in the door jamb just so we get the painful point that one particular door may not be ours to open again. And that’s the point here, too, with this July 12th new moon solar eclipse:
Pluto will make sure that whatever resurfaces occurs so that you can transform it in a way that supports your emotional security. The simple choice comes down to love and what nurtures you. The North Node (what you are heading toward) in Leo, the sign of the heart, emphasizes this theme.
For example, if you have Capricorn rising, this New Moon Solar Eclipse occurs in your 7th house of relationships. While Mercury retrograde can often bring messages from past friends, lovers, enemies, you may be thinking that this solar eclipse may bring an ex back into your life. That is possible. However, the more likely manifestation is that you meet someone who looks like your ex or who you sense you knew in a past life. In other words, there will be a feeling of familiarity—that you’ve been with this person before. This new/old dynamic is giving you the opportunity to enact the lessons you learned in the past. You won’t make the same mistakes twice, right?
If you have Leo rising, this eclipse is occurring in your 12th house—a very spiritual placement. With the north node in your sign since May 2017 and ending in November 2018, all Leos have been faced with “destined moments” over the last year and a half. Opportunities came. Did you take them? How did you decide if you would? Now with this eclipse in your 12th house of endings and karma, you will be faced once again with issues of commitment.
For you, many old cycles are ending and you will feel this poignantly at this solar eclipse (and on the lunar eclipse at the end of July 2018). How have your choices imprisoned you in patterns of behavior that do not let your let shine? How have you lost yourself in doing so much for others? Can you make the simple choice now to release the idea that you must “perform” in order to “earn” love? Can you make the simple choice to let go and change your life? Whatever you decide now will help make it happen by November 2018.
It may be helpful at this new moon solar eclipse to meditate on the Chariot (Cancer) and Strength (Leo) cards in the Tarot deck. If you find yourself pulled in two directions, torn between two choices (as symbolized by the horses in the Chariot card), ask yourself: which choice brings me strength?
Don’t overcomplicate your answer. The heart knows what it knows.
